This is Installment 016 in the MAXIMUM MUSIC CAMPAIGN.

I have been reading (via my Kindle Paperwhite because of my aging eyes) DAUGHTER OF THE DRAGON: ANNA MAE WONG'S RENDEZVOUS WITH AMERICAN HISTORY, a (highly recommended) biography of Asian-American actress Anna May Wong written by Yunte Huang. Anna May Wong's life, work, and existence as the first major Asian-American film star has been a fascination of mine for the past year or so, something amplified by the release of a commemorative US Quarter featuring her beautiful face (and I fully admit to hoarding quarters with her pretty visage whenever they turn up in my pocket change). The idea for the track came the night before recording when I came up with the title idea, and my recent days of listening to John Coltrane led me to come up with a "Naima"-style chord change, along with having one of the melodies in this piece be based around an Asian scale rather than a western one. There's a heavy use of Chinese traditional instruments (pipa, dizi flute, and ehru violin) in this track that I hope captures and honors Anna May Wong's life and work.
